Three girls from my school passed away on February 4th, 2012. They were involved in a horrible car accident. The girls were on their way home from TP-ing a friends house when they crashed.
Caitlin Scannell was a junior. She was one of those girls who loved life. She made you smile no matter what. I don’t think I ever heard a bad thing come out of her mouth. She was kind and had an open heart for anybody. She and I had Spanish and Chorus together. Her Spanish name was Guacamole. It’s weird because on Friday our Spanish question of the day was “Te amas o te odias Caitlin Scannell, porque o no porque?” Or “Do you love or hate Caitlin Scannell, why or why not?” And everyone in class answered that they loved her for many reasons. Because she was nice, funny, smart, beautiful. She was full of life. And there’s no one like her. She’s always going to have a special place in my heart.Katie Berg was also a junior. We weren’t very close, but Katie was also one of a kind. She was very outspoken and honest. I remember her walking around like she owned the school and in a sense she did. She always looked like a Barbie and she was such a girl. There wasn’t a thing that Katie was afraid to say. Katie’s family is one of the strongest I know. Katie has a disabled brother who just got cancer-free last week. Her parents have been through hell and back. But we were all lucky to have Katie around.
Sabrina Stahl was a Freshman. I have a Freshman on my dance team named Amber and they were best friends. And from what I hear from Amber, Sabrina was a lively girl. Sabrina rode my bus when I moved here and she was the only one who was nice to me. Just seeing the Freshmen around school breaks my heart. She is loved so much by everyone. Her brothers are close friends of mine and they are being so strong. They tell stories of her and laugh about her life. Sabrina didn’t get the chance to live out life like the rest of us, but she’s watching over us to make sure that we get the chance to do just that.
Six other girls were involved. The two that are doing the best are my extremely close friends. The driver is supposed to be roommates with me when we head off to Madison in the fall. Haley, the girl in the front seat, has been one of my best friends since 7th grade. She’s doing real well and I’ve seen her two or three times since the accident. Allie, my catcher in softball, decided she wanted to play soccer this year and she quit dance, but our entire team has been there to support her. I saw her too and she was so happy to see us. Jesse is the light of my show choir mornings and she was her same old joking self. I asked her how her hands were doing and she just responded, “They’re broken!!” Theresa and Kassie I don’t know very well at all, but I wish them a quick recovery so I can change that. I love these girls for being so strong through this all. And I will be there for them no matter what happens from here on out.
These girls are so special to our community. And it’s so amazing the amount of support we’ve gotten from the entire state. We’ve had people send blankets, volunteer to work our sporting events, they’ve called our school’s administrators. It’s honestly astounding. Though this was a tragic event it’s brought us so much closer as a town. I was thinking about leaving here but this has completely changed my mind. I can’t even imagine how hard this would be without the people I love helping everyone through it.
